The Gospel of John was written around 120CE1,2,3. The text is anonymous4 and definitely not written by the apostle called John5 nor by any eyewitness5, although the early Christian church promoted this as such6. We do know that the author was from Ephesus (in Asia Minor). The oldest surviving fragment of John is from 125CE. The earliest versions did not contain the final chapter, which describes Jesus Christ appearing to his disciples after rising from the dead.

It is significantly different from the other gospels in style and theology7. The Gospel of John is an interpretation of events in Jesus life8 that the author had heard about, but, with no real parables9 and instead, some plays on words and figurative, symbolic and abstract speech8. The other three gospels have Jesus speak tersely, in witty sayings, but 'John quotes lengthy speeches in fluent Greek' and is clearly not replicating the words of Jesus himself10. Miracles and events that were only ever seen by John are suspect (no-one else wrote about them!)8. It is best to consider the Gospel of John to be imaginative fiction or spiritual encouragement, but not strictly factual nor historical7.

John's gospel features numerous self-declarations of Jesus beginning with the revelation formula 'I am....' The Johannine Jesus announces himself as the light of the world, the bread from heaven, the true vine, the good shepherd, the door, the way, the truth, and the life, and so on. If Jesus indeed said such things, why on earth do we hear nothing of the kind in any of the other gospels? Isn't it rather because Jesus never made any such statements, but Christian devotion predicated all these things of him?

"Incredible Shrinking Son of Man: How Reliable Is the Gospel Tradition?" by Robert M. Price (2003)11

1. Written Too Late to Be an Eyewitness Account12

The Gospel of John was written around 120CE1,13. The oldest surviving fragment dates from 125CE. Conservatives prefer to believe an earlier date because it makes the Gospel more legitimate if it could be written by someone who knew Jesus. However, even conservatives allow a date of 100CE14, which is still too late to be the words of an eyewitness of Jesus5. Much of the theology professed in John is that which was developed until much later than the other gospels7. John 9 in particular contains several 'historical' details that were not actual true until several decades after Jesus' time.

2. Everyone's Speech Differs from the Other Gospels12

Whether we are ostensibly listening to Jesus, John the Baptist, Thomas, Peter, Mary and Martha, the Sanhedrin-they each and all sound just like the evangelist! [...] John has Jesus preach himself as the object of faith, while Matthew, Mark, and Luke make Jesus a pointer to the Father.

3. An Untrustworthy Gospel16

#bible #christianity #jesus #john

It is best to consider the Gospel of John to be imaginative fiction or spiritual encouragement, but not strictly factual nor historical7. Everyone who speaks in this gospel has the same set of distinctive characters that are suspiciously unique to John (including the words of Jesus)17. Theologian A. N. Wilson says "scholars have disputed whether any of this [gospel] can be understood historically, since the Fourth Gospel so obviously writes from a 'theological' point of view"7 and that "it can only be read as a testimony, not as neutral history"18.

4. The 21 chapters of John (879 verses)

John 1 (51 verses) - The Word of God; John the Baptist preaches, baptizes; Jesus' baptism; Jesus calls Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Nathanael24

2The same was in the beginning with God.this one was in the beginning with God;
3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.all things through him did happen, and without him happened not even one thing that hath happened.
4In him was life; and the life was the light of men.In him was life, and the life was the light of men,
5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.and the light in the darkness did shine, and the darkness did not perceive it.
6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.There came a man -- having been sent from God -- whose name `is' John,
7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.this one came for testimony, that he might testify about the Light, that all might believe through him;
8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.that one was not the Light, but -- that he might testify about the Light.
9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.He was the true Light, which doth enlighten every man, coming to the world;
10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.in the world he was, and the world through him was made, and the world did not know him:
11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.to his own things he came, and his own people did not receive him;
12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:but as many as did receive him to them he gave authority to become sons of God -- to those believing in his name,
13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.who -- not of blood nor of a will of flesh, nor of a will of man but -- of God were begotten.
14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.And the Word became flesh, and did tabernacle among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as of an only begotten of a father, full of grace and truth.
15John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.John doth testify concerning him, and hath cried, saying, `This was he of whom I said, He who after me is coming, hath come before me, for he was before me;'
16And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.and out of his fulness did we all receive, and grace over-against grace;
17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.for the law through Moses was given, the grace and the truth through Jesus Christ did come;
18No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.God no one hath ever seen; the only begotten Son, who is on the bosom of the Father -- he did declare.
19And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent out of Jerusalem priests and Levites, that they might question him, `Who art thou?'
20And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.and he confessed and did not deny, and confessed -- `I am not the Christ.'
21And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.And they questioned him, `What then? Elijah art thou?' and he saith, `I am not.' -- `The prophet art thou?' and he answered, `No.'
22Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?They said then to him, `Who art thou, that we may give an answer to those sending us? what dost thou say concerning thyself?'
23He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.He said, `I `am' a voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.'
24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.And those sent were of the Pharisees,
25And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?and they questioned him and said to him, `Why, then, dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?'
26John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;John answered them, saying, `I baptize with water, but in midst of you he hath stood whom ye have not known, this one it is who is coming after me, who hath been before me,
27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the cord of his sandal.'
28These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing,
29The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.on the morrow John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, `Lo, the Lamb of God, who is taking away the sin of the world;
30This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.this is he concerning whom I said, After me doth come a man, who hath come before me, because he was before me:
31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.and I knew him not, but, that he might be manifested to Israel, because of this I came with the water baptizing.
32And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.And John testified, saying -- `I have seen the Spirit coming down, as a dove, out of heaven, and it remained on him;
33And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.and I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whomsoever thou mayst see the Spirit coming down, and remaining on him, this is he who is baptizing with the Holy Spirit;
34And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.and I have seen, and have testified, that this is the Son of God.'
35Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;On the morrow, again, John was standing, and two of his disciples,
36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!and having looked on Jesus walking, he saith, `Lo, the Lamb of God;'
37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.and the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus.
38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?And Jesus having turned, and having beheld them following, saith to them, `What seek ye?' and they said to them, `Rabbi, (which is, being interpreted, Teacher,) where remainest thou?'
39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.He saith to them, `Come and see;' they came, and saw where he doth remain, and with him they remained that day and the hour was about the tenth.
40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard from John, and followed him;
41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.this one doth first find his own brother Simon, and saith to him, `We have found the Messiah,' (which is, being interpreted, The Anointed,)
42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.and he brought him unto Jesus: and having looked upon him, Jesus saith, `Thou art Simon, the son of Jonas, thou shalt be called Cephas,' (which is interpreted, A rock.)
43The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.On the morrow, he willed to go forth to Galilee, and he findeth Philip, and saith to him, `Be following me.'
44Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.And Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter;
45Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith to him, `Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and the prophets, we have found, Jesus the son of Joseph, who `is' from Nazareth;'
46And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.and Nathanael said to him, `Out of Nazareth is any good thing able to be?' Philip said to him, `Come and see.'
47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!Jesus saw Nathanael coming unto him, and he saith concerning him, `Lo, truly an Israelite, in whom guile is not;'
48Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.Nathanael saith to him, `Whence me dost thou know?' Jesus answered and said to him, `Before Philip's calling thee -- thou being under the fig-tree -- I saw thee.'
49Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.Nathanael answered and saith to him, `Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the king of Israel.'
50Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.Jesus answered and said to him, `Because I said to thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, thou dost believe; greater things than these thou shalt see;'
51And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.and he saith to him, `Verily, verily, I say to you, henceforth ye shall see the heaven opened, and the messengers of God going up and coming down upon the Son of Man.'

John 2 (25 verses) - Jesus turns water into wine at wedding feast in Cana, drives businessmen from temple, predicts his resurrection; many believe24

KJVYLTNotes
1And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:And the third day a marriage happened in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there,
2And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.and also Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage;
3And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.and wine having failed, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, `Wine they have not;'
4Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.Jesus saith to her, `What -- to me and to thee, woman? not yet is mine hour come.'
5His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.His mother saith to the ministrants, `Whatever he may say to you -- do.'
6And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.And there were there six water-jugs of stone, placed according to the purifying of the Jews, holding each two or three measures.
7Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.Jesus saith to them, `Fill the water-jugs with water;' and they filled them -- unto the brim;
8And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.and he saith to them, `Draw out, now, and bear to the director of the apartment;' and they bare.
9When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,And as the director of the apartment tasted the water become wine, and knew not whence it is, (but the ministrants knew, who have drawn the water,) the director of the feast doth call the bridegroom,
10And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.and saith to him, `Every man, at first, the good wine doth set forth; and when they may have drunk freely, then the inferior; thou didst keep the good wine till now.'
11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.This beginning of the signs did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him;
12After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.after this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples; and there they remained not many days.
13And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,
14And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:and he found in the temple those selling oxen, and sheep, and doves, and the money-changers sitting,
15And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;and having made a whip of small cords, he put all forth out of the temple, also the sheep, and the oxen; and of the money-changers he poured out the coins, and the tables he overthrew,
16And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.and to those selling the doves he said, `Take these things hence; make not the house of my Father a house of merchandise.'
17And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.And his disciples remembered that it is written, `The zeal of Thy house did eat me up;'
18Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?the Jews then answered and said to him, `What sign dost thou shew to us -- that thou dost these things?'
19Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.Jesus answered and said to them, `Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.'
20Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?The Jews, therefore, said, `Forty and six years was this sanctuary building, and wilt thou in three days raise it up?'
21But he spake of the temple of his body.but he spake concerning the sanctuary of his body;
22When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.when, then, he was raised out of the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this to them, and they believed the Writing, and the word that Jesus said.
23Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.And as he was in Jerusalem, in the passover, in the feast, many believed in his name, beholding his signs that he was doing;
24But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,and Jesus himself was not trusting himself to them, because of his knowing all `men',
25And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.and because he had no need that any should testify concerning man, for he himself was knowing what was in man.

35The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.the Father doth love the Son, and all things hath given into his hand;

2(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)(though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,)
3He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.he left Judea and went away again to Galilee,
4And he must needs go through Samaria.and it was behoving him to go through Samaria.
5Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.He cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son;
6Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.and there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour;
7There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.there cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, `Give me to drink;'
8(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)for his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals;
9Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.the Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, `How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?' for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans.
10Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.Jesus answered and said to her, `If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.'
11The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?The woman saith to him, `Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water?
12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?'
13Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:Jesus answered and said to her, `Every one who is drinking of this water shall thirst again;
14But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.but whoever may drink of the water that I will give him, may not thirst -- to the age; and the water that I will give him shall become in him a well of water, springing up to life age-during.'
15The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.The woman saith unto him, `Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.'
16Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.Jesus saith to her, `Go, call thy husband, and come hither;'
17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:the woman answered and said, `I have not a husband.' Jesus saith to her, `Well didst thou say -- A husband I have not;
18For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.for five husbands thou hast had, and, now, he whom thou hast is not thy husband; this hast thou said truly.'
19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.The woman saith to him, `Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet;
20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.our fathers in this mountain did worship, and ye -- ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it behoveth to worship.'
21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.Jesus saith to her, `Woman, believe me, that there doth come an hour, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father;
22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.ye worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews;
23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.but, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him;
24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.God `is' a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.'
25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.The woman saith to him, `I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;'
26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.Jesus saith to her, `I am `he', who am speaking to thee.'
27And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?And upon this came his disciples, and were wondering that with a woman he was speaking, no one, however, said, `What seekest thou?' or `Why speakest thou with her?'
28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and saith to the men,
29Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?`Come, see a man, who told me all things -- as many as I did; is this the Christ?'
30Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.They went forth therefore out of the city, and were coming unto him.
31In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.And in the meanwhile his disciples were asking him, saying, `Rabbi, eat;'
32But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.and he said to them, `I have food to eat that ye have not known.'
33Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?The disciples then said one to another, `Did any one bring him anything to eat?'
34Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.Jesus saith to them, `My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work;
35Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.do not say that it is yet four months, and the harvest cometh; lo, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and see the fields, that they are white unto harvest already.
36And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.`And he who is reaping doth receive a reward, and doth gather fruit to life age-during, that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping may rejoice together;
37And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.for in this the saying is the true one, that one is the sower and another the reaper.
38I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.I sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others laboured, and ye into their labour have entered.
39And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.And from that city many believed in him, of the Samaritans, because of the word of the woman testifying, -- `He told me all things -- as many as I did.'
40So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.When, then, the Samaritans came unto him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days;
41And many more believed because of his own word;and many more did believe because of his word,
42And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.and said to the woman -- `No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world -- the Christ.'
43Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.And after the two days he went forth thence, and went away to Galilee,
44For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.for Jesus himself testified that a prophet in his own country shall not have honour;
45Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.when then, he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem in the feast -- for they also went to the feast.
46So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum,
47When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.he, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die.
48Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.Jesus then said unto him, `If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.'
49The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.The courtier saith unto him, `Sir, come down before my child die;'
50Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.Jesus saith to him, `Be going on; thy son doth live.' And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on,
51And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.and he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying -- `Thy child doth live;'
52Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.he inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him -- `Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;'
53So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.then the father knew that `it was' in that hour in which Jesus said to him -- `Thy son doth live,' and he himself believed, and his whole house;
54This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.this again a second sign did Jesus, having come out of Judea to Galilee.

2Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.and there is in Jerusalem by the sheep-`gate' a pool that is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches,
3In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.in these were lying a great multitude of the ailing, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water,
4For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.for a messenger at a set time was going down in the pool, and was troubling the water, the first then having gone in after the troubling of the water, became whole of whatever sickness he was held.
5And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.and there was a certain man there being in ailment thirty and eight years,
6When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?him Jesus having seen lying, and having known that he is already a long time, he saith to him, `Dost thou wish to become whole?'
7The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.The ailing man answered him, `Sir, I have no man, that, when the water may be troubled, he may put me into the pool, and while I am coming, another doth go down before me.'
8Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.Jesus saith to him, `Rise, take up thy couch, and be walking;'
9And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.and immediately the man became whole, and he took up his couch, and was walking, and it was a sabbath on that day,
10The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.the Jews then said to him that hath been healed, `It is a sabbath; it is not lawful to thee to take up the couch.'
11He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.He answered them, `He who made me whole -- that one said to me, Take up thy couch, and be walking;'
12Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?they questioned him, then, `Who is the man who is saying to thee, Take up thy couch and be walking?'
13And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.But he that was healed had not known who he is, for Jesus did move away, a multitude being in the place.
14Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.After these things, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, `Lo, thou hast become whole; sin no more, lest something worse may happen to thee.'
15The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.The man went away, and told the Jews that it is Jesus who made him whole,
16And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.and because of this were the Jews persecuting Jesus, and seeking to kill him, because these things he was doing on a sabbath.
17But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.And Jesus answered them, `My Father till now doth work, and I work;'
18Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.because of this, then, were the Jews seeking the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the sabbath, but he also called God his own Father, making himself equal to God.
19Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.Jesus therefore responded and said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything of himself, if he may not see the Father doing anything; for whatever things He may do, these also the Son in like manner doth;
20For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.for the Father doth love the Son, and doth shew to him all things that He himself doth; and greater works than these He will shew him, that ye may wonder.
21For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.`For, as the Father doth raise the dead, and doth make alive, so also the Son doth make alive whom he willeth;
22For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:for neither doth the Father judge any one, but all the judgment He hath given to the Son,
23That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.that all may honour the Son according as they honour the Father; he who is not honouring the Son, doth not honour the Father who sent him.
24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.`Verily, verily, I say to you -- He who is hearing my word, and is believing Him who sent me, hath life age-during, and to judgment he doth not come, but hath passed out of the death to the life.
25Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.`Verily, verily, I say to you -- There cometh an hour, and it now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and those having heard shall live;
26For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;for, as the Father hath life in himself, so He gave also to the Son to have life in himself,
27And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.and authority He gave him also to do judgment, because he is Son of Man.
28Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,`Wonder not at this, because there doth come an hour in which all those in the tombs shall hear his voice,
29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.and they shall come forth; those who did the good things to a rising again of life, and those who practised the evil things to a rising again of judgment.
30I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.`I am not able of myself to do anything; according as I hear I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me.
31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.`If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true;
32There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.another there is who is testifying concerning me, and I have known that the testimony that he doth testify concerning me is true;
33Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.ye have sent unto John, and he hath testified to the truth.
34But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.`But I do not receive testimony from man, but these things I say that ye may be saved;
35He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.he was the burning and shining lamp, and ye did will to be glad, for an hour, in his light.
36But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.`But I have the testimony greater than John's, for the works that the Father gave me, that I might finish them, the works themselves that I do, they testify concerning me, that the Father hath sent me.
37And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.`And the Father who sent me Himself hath testified concerning me; ye have neither heard His voice at any time, nor His appearance have ye seen;
38And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.and His word ye have not remaining in you, because whom He sent, him ye do not believe.
39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.`Ye search the Writings, because ye think in them to have life age-during, and these are they that are testifying concerning me;
40And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.and ye do not will to come unto me, that ye may have life;
41I receive not honour from men.glory from man I do not receive,
42But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.but I have known you, that the love of God ye have not in yourselves.
43I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.`I have come in the name of my Father, and ye do not receive me; if another may come in his own name, him ye will receive;
44How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?how are ye able -- ye -- to believe, glory from one another receiving, and the glory that `is' from God alone ye seek not?
45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.`Do not think that I will accuse you unto the Father; there is who is accusing you, Moses -- in whom ye have hoped;
46For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.for if ye were believing Moses, ye would have been believing me, for he wrote concerning me;
47But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?but if his writings ye believe not, how shall ye believe my sayings?'

2And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.and there was following him a great multitude, because they were seeing his signs that he was doing on the ailing;
3And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.and Jesus went up to the mount, and he was there sitting with his disciples,
4And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.and the passover was nigh, the feast of the Jews.
5When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?Jesus then having lifted up `his' eyes and having seen that a great multitude doth come to him, saith unto Philip, `Whence shall we buy loaves, that these may eat?' --
6And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.and this he said, trying him, for he himself had known what he was about to do.
7Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.Philip answered him, `Two hundred denaries' worth of loaves are not sufficient to them, that each of them may receive some little;'
8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,one of his disciples -- Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter -- saith to him,
9There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?`There is one little lad here who hath five barley loaves, and two fishes, but these -- what are they to so many?'
10And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.And Jesus said, `Make the men to sit down;' and there was much grass in the place, the men then sat down, in number, as it were, five thousand,
11And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.and Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those reclining, in like manner, also of the little fishes as much as they wished.
12When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.And when they were filled, he saith to his disciples, `Gather together the broken pieces that are over, that nothing may be lost;'
13Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.they gathered together, therefore, and filled twelve hand-baskets with broken pieces, from the five barley loaves that were over to those having eaten.
14Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.The men, then, having seen the sign that Jesus did, said -- `This is truly the Prophet, who is coming to the world;'
15When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.Jesus, therefore, having known that they are about to come, and to take him by force that they may make him king, retired again to the mountain himself alone.
16And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,And when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
17And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.and having entered into the boat, they were going over the sea to Capernaum, and darkness had already come, and Jesus had not come unto them,
18And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.the sea also -- a great wind blowing -- was being raised,
19So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.having pushed onwards, therefore, about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and coming nigh to the boat, and they were afraid;
20But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.and he saith to them, `I am `he', be not afraid;'
21Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.they were willing then to receive him into the boat, and immediately the boat came unto the land to which they were going.
22The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;On the morrow, the multitude that was standing on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little boat there except one -- that into which his disciples entered -- and that Jesus went not in with his disciples into the little boat, but his disciples went away alone,
23(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)(and other little boats came from Tiberias, nigh the place where they did eat the bread, the Lord having given thanks),
24When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.when therefore the multitude saw that Jesus is not there, nor his disciples, they also themselves did enter into the boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus;
25And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?and having found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, `Rabbi, when hast thou come hither?'
26Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.Jesus answered them and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were satisfied;
27Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.work not for the food that is perishing, but for the food that is remaining to life age-during, which the Son of Man will give to you, for him did the Father seal -- `even' God.'
28Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?They said therefore unto him, `What may we do that we may work the works of God?'
29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.Jesus answered and said to them, `This is the work of God, that ye may believe in him whom He did send.'
30They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?They said therefore to him, `What sign, then, dost thou, that we may see and may believe thee? what dost thou work?
31Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.our fathers the manna did eat in the wilderness, according as it is having been written, Bread out of the heaven He gave them to eat.'
32Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread out of the heaven; but my Father doth give you the true bread out of the heaven;
33For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.for the bread of God is that which is coming down out of the heaven, and giving life to the world.'
34Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.They said, therefore, unto him, `Sir, always give us this bread.'
35And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.And Jesus said to them, `I am the bread of the life; he who is coming unto me may not hunger, and he who is believing in me may not thirst -- at any time;
36But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.but I said to you, that ye also have seen me, and ye believe not;
37All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.all that the Father doth give to me will come unto me; and him who is coming unto me, I may in no wise cast without,
38For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.because I have come down out of the heaven, not that I may do my will, but the will of Him who sent me.
39And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.`And this is the will of the Father who sent me, that all that He hath given to me I may not lose of it, but may raise it up in the last day;
40And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.and this is the will of Him who sent me, that every one who is beholding the Son, and is believing in him, may have life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day.'
41The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.The Jews, therefore, were murmuring at him, because he said, `I am the bread that came down out of the heaven;'
42And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?and they said, `Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then saith this one -- Out of the heaven I have come down?'
43Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.Jesus answered, therefore, and said to them, `Murmur not one with another;
44No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.no one is able to come unto me, if the Father who sent me may not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day;
45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.it is having been written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God; every one therefore who heard from the Father, and learned, cometh to me;
46Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.not that any one hath seen the Father, except he who is from God, he hath seen the Father.
47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.`Verily, verily, I say to you, He who is believing in me, hath life age-during;
48I am that bread of life.I am the bread of the life;
49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.your fathers did eat the manna in the wilderness, and they died;
50This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.this is the bread that out of the heaven is coming down, that any one may eat of it, and not die.
51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.`I am the living bread that came down out of the heaven; if any one may eat of this bread he shall live -- to the age; and the bread also that I will give is my flesh, that I will give for the life of the world.'
52The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?The Jews, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, `How is this one able to give us `his' flesh to eat?'
53Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, If ye may not eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and may not drink his blood, ye have no life in yourselves;
54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, hath life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day;
55For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.for my flesh truly is food, and my blood truly is drink;
56He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, doth remain in me, and I in him.
57As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.`According as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, he also who is eating me, even that one shall live because of me;
58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.this is the bread that came down out of the heaven; not as your fathers did eat the manna, and died; he who is eating this bread shall live -- to the age.'
59These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.These things he said in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum;
60Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?many, therefore, of his disciples having heard, said, `This word is hard; who is able to hear it?'
61When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?And Jesus having known in himself that his disciples are murmuring about this, said to them, `Doth this stumble you?
62What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?if then ye may behold the Son of Man going up where he was before?
63It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.the spirit it is that is giving life; the flesh doth not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life;
64But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.but there are certain of you who do not believe;' for Jesus had known from the beginning who they are who are not believing, and who is he who will deliver him up,
65And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.and he said, `Because of this I have said to you -- No one is able to come unto me, if it may not have been given him from my Father.'
66From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.From this `time' many of his disciples went away backward, and were no more walking with him,
67Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?Jesus, therefore, said to the twelve, `Do ye also wish to go away?'
68Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.Simon Peter, therefore, answered him, `Sir, unto whom shall we go? thou hast sayings of life age-during;
69And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.and we have believed, and we have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.'
70Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?Jesus answered them, `Did not I choose you -- the twelve? and of you -- one is a devil.
71He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.And he spake of Judas, Simon's `son', Iscariot, for he was about to deliver him up, being one of the twelve.

John 7 (53 verses) - Jesus went to the feast. The people said, "Is this the Christ?" The chief priests tried to arrest him. He called out, "Come and drink."25

2Now the Jew's feast of tabernacles was at hand.and the feast of the Jews was nigh -- that of tabernacles --
3His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.his brethren, therefore, said unto him, `Remove hence, and go away to Judea, that thy disciples also may behold thy works that thou dost;
4For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.for no one in secret doth anything, and himself seeketh to be in public; if thou dost these things -- manifest thyself to the world;'
5For neither did his brethren believe in him.for not even were his brethren believing in him.
6Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.Jesus, therefore, saith to them, `My time is not yet present, but your time is always ready;
7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.the world is not able to hate you, but me it doth hate, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil.
8Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come.Ye -- go ye up to this feast; I do not yet go up to this feast, because my time hath not yet been fulfilled;'
9When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.and saying these things to them, he remained in Galilee.
10But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.And when his brethren went up, then also he himself went up to the feast, not manifestly, but as in secret;
11Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?the Jews, therefore, were seeking him, in the feast, and said, `Where is that one?'
12And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.and there was much murmuring about him among the multitudes, some indeed said -- `He is good;' and others said, `No, but he leadeth astray the multitude;'
13Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.no one, however, was speaking freely about him, through fear of the Jews.
14Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.And it being now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up to the temple, and he was teaching,
15And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?and the Jews were wondering, saying, `How hath this one known letters -- not having learned?'
16Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.Jesus answered them and said, `My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me;
17If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.if any one may will to do His will, he shall know concerning the teaching, whether it is of God, or -- I do speak from myself.
18He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.`He who is speaking from himself his own glory doth seek, but he who is seeking the glory of him who sent him, this one is true, and unrighteousness is not in him;
19Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?hath not Moses given you the law? and none of you doth the law; why me do ye seek to kill?'
20The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?The multitude answered and said, `Thou hast a demon, who doth seek to kill thee?'
21Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.Jesus answered and said to them, `One work I did, and ye all wonder,
22Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.because of this, Moses hath given you the circumcision -- not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers -- and on a sabbath ye circumcise a man;
23If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?if a man doth receive circumcision on a sabbath that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ye wroth with me that I made a man all whole on a sabbath?
24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.judge not according to appearance, but the righteous judgment judge.'
25Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?Certain, therefore, of the Jerusalemites said, `Is not this he whom they are seeking to kill?
26But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?and, lo, he doth speak freely, and they say nothing to him; did the rulers at all know truly that this is truly the Christ?
27Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.but this one -- we have known whence he is; and the Christ, when he doth come, no one doth know whence he is.'
28Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.Jesus cried, therefore, in the temple, teaching and saying, `Ye have both known me, and ye have known whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but He who sent me is true, whom ye have not known;
29But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.and I have known Him, because I am from Him, and He did send me.'
30Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.They were seeking, therefore, to seize him, and no one laid the hand on him, because his hour had not yet come,
31And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?and many out of the multitude did believe in him, and said -- `The Christ -- when he may come -- will he do more signs than these that this one did?'
32The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they may take him;
33Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Yet a little time I am with you, and I go away unto Him who sent me;
34Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.ye will seek me, and ye shall not find; and where I am, ye are not able to come.'
35Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?The Jews, therefore, said among themselves, `Whither is this one about to go that we shall not find him? -- to the dispersion of the Greeks is he about to go? and to teach the Greeks;
36What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?what is this word that he said, Ye will seek me, and ye shall not find? and, Where I am, ye are not able to come?'
37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.And in the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, `If any one doth thirst, let him come unto me and drink;
38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.he who is believing in me, according as the Writing said, Rivers out of his belly shall flow of living water;'
39(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)and this he said of the Spirit, which those believing in him were about to receive; for not yet was the Holy Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
40Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.Many, therefore out of the multitude, having heard the word, said, `This is truly the Prophet;'
41Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?others said, `This is the Christ;' and others said, `Why, out of Galilee doth the Christ come?
42Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?Did not the Writing say, that out of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem -- the village where David was -- the Christ doth come?'
43So there was a division among the people because of him.A division, therefore, arose among the multitude because of him.
44And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.And certain of them were willing to seize him, but no one laid hands on him;
45Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?the officers came, therefore, unto the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, `Wherefore did ye not bring him?'
46The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.The officers answered, `Never so spake man -- as this man.'
47Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?The Pharisees, therefore, answered them, `Have ye also been led astray?
48Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?did any one out of the rulers believe in him? or out of the Pharisees?
49But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.but this multitude, that is not knowing the law, is accursed.'
50Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)Nicodemus saith unto them -- he who came by night unto him -- being one of them,
51Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?`Doth our law judge the man, if it may not hear from him first, and know what he doth?'
52They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.They answered and said to him, `Art thou also out of Galilee? search and see, that a prophet out of Galilee hath not risen;'
53And every man went unto his own house.and each one went on to his house, but Jesus went on to the mount of the Olives.

John 8 (59 verses)

Did the author of the Fourth Gospel write the famous story of the woman taken in adultery, or was this a later addition to the Gospel by a well-meaning scribe? The story is found in many of our later manuscripts between chapters 7 and 8 but not in the earliest ones; moreover, the writing style is significantly different from the rest of the Gospel. Almost all scholars acknowledge that the story was added to manuscripts of John's Gospel many years after it had first been circulated.

2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;
3And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,
4They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime -- committing adultery,
5Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'
6This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,
7So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you -- let him first cast the stone at her;'
8And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,
9And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders -- unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those -- thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'
11She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.and she said, `No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'
12Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'
13The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'
14Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself -- my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye -- ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.
15Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.`Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,
16And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;
17It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;
18I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.I am `one' who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'
19Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'
20These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;
21Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'
22Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'
23And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;
24I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am `he', ye shall die in your sins.'
25Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.They said, therefore, to him, `Thou -- who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;
26I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I -- what things I heard from Him -- these I say to the world.'
27They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.They knew not that of the Father he spake to them;
28Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am `he'; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;
29And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'
30As he spake these words, many believed on him.As he is speaking these things, many believed in him;
31Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,
32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.and the truth shall make you free.'
33They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say -- Ye shall become free?'
34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you -- Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,
35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.and the servant doth not remain in the house -- to the age, the son doth remain -- to the age;
36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.
37I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.`I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;
38I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.I -- that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father -- ye do.'
39They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;
40But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.and now, ye seek to kill me -- a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;
41Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.ye do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have -- God;'
42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;
43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.
44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.`Ye are of a father -- the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar -- also his father.
45And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.`And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.
46Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?
47He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'
48Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'
49Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;
50And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;
51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see -- to the age.'
52Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death -- to the age!
53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'
54Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;
55Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you -- speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;
56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'
57Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'
58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming -- I am;'
59Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

John 9 (41 verses) - An anachronistic rewrite of Mark's story of the healed blind man

The Gospel of John chapter 9 contains a rewrite of Mark 8:22-26, wherein a blind man is healed by Jesus. But John adds many details that were clearly invented much later, rather than being true recordings of a historical event. It contradicts Mark (a more trustworthy gospel) in several of those details, but worse than that, it contains anachronistic elements that show us that the text was not created until several decades later than the time you'd otherwise assume. When the healed man professes faith in Jesus, he is excommunicated from the synagogue by the Jews, however, such routine excommunications of Jesus-believers did not begin until decades later than the time of Jesus. The Pharisees even view Jesus as the founder of a rival religion, which is a ridiculous anachronism suitable only for a time several decades later when this was apparent fact. Likewise, because when John was writing (over 100 years later), everyone already knew that Jesus was the messiah, so the concept of this being a secret is forgotten in John 9:35-39. John is widely regarded as an untrustworthy gospel, and it is not wise to base theological or historical arguments on its text.23

John 10 (42 verses) - Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd. I give my life for the sheep." They asked, "Are you the Christ?" He said, "My sheep follow me."25

KJVYLTNotes
1Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.`Verily, verily, I say to you, He who is not entering through the door to the fold of the sheep, but is going up from another side, that one is a thief and a robber;

John 10:41 is mentioned on The Nasorean Mandaeans / Sabians: 1. History

2But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.and he who is entering through the door is shepherd of the sheep;
3To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.to this one the doorkeeper doth open, and the sheep hear his voice, and his own sheep he doth call by name, and doth lead them forth;
4And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.and when his own sheep he may put forth, before them he goeth on, and the sheep follow him, because they have known his voice;
5And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.and a stranger they will not follow, but will flee from him, because they have not known the voice of strangers.'
6This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.This similitude spake Jesus to them, and they knew not what the things were that he was speaking to them;
7Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.Jesus said therefore again to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you -- I am the door of the sheep;
8All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.all, as many as came before me, are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them;
9I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.I am the door, through me if any one may come in, he shall be saved, and he shall come in, and go out, and find pasture.
10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.`The thief doth not come, except that he may steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they may have life, and may have `it' abundantly.
11I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.`I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd his life layeth down for the sheep;
12But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.and the hireling, and not being a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, doth behold the wolf coming, and doth leave the sheep, and doth flee; and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep;
13The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.and the hireling doth flee because he is an hireling, and is not caring for the sheep.
14I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.`I am the good shepherd, and I know my `sheep', and am known by mine,
15As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.according as the Father doth know me, and I know the Father, and my life I lay down for the sheep,
16And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.and other sheep I have that are not of this fold, these also it behoveth me to bring, and my voice they will hear, and there shall become one flock -- one shepherd.
17Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.`Because of this doth the Father love me, because I lay down my life, that again I may take it;
18No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.no one doth take it from me, but I lay it down of myself; authority I have to lay it down, and authority I have again to take it; this command I received from my Father.'
19There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.Therefore, again, there came a division among the Jews, because of these words,
20And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?and many of them said, `He hath a demon, and is mad, why do ye hear him?'
21Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?others said, `These sayings are not those of a demoniac; is a demon able blind men's eyes to open?'
22And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.And the dedication in Jerusalem came, and it was winter,
23And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the porch of Solomon,
24Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.the Jews, therefore, came round about him, and said to him, `Till when our soul dost thou hold in suspense? if thou art the Christ, tell us freely.'
25Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.Jesus answered them, `I told you, and ye do not believe; the works that I do in the name of my Father, these testify concerning me;
26But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.but ye do not believe, for ye are not of my sheep,
27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:according as I said to you: My sheep my voice do hear, and I know them, and they follow me,
28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.and life age-during I give to them, and they shall not perish -- to the age, and no one shall pluck them out of my hand;
29My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.my Father, who hath given to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to pluck out of the hand of my Father;
30I and my Father are one.I and the Father are one.'
31Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.Therefore, again, did the Jews take up stones that they may stone him;
32Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?Jesus answered them, `Many good works did I shew you from my Father; because of which work of them do ye stone me?'
33The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.The Jews answered him, saying, `For a good work we do not stone thee, but for evil speaking, and because thou, being a man, dost make thyself God.'
34Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?Jesus answered them, `Is it not having been written in your law: I said, ye are gods?
35If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;if them he did call gods unto whom the word of God came, (and the Writing is not able to be broken,)
36Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?of him whom the Father did sanctify, and send to the world, do ye say -- Thou speakest evil, because I said, Son of God I am?
37If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.if I do not the works of my Father, do not believe me;
38But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.and if I do, even if me ye may not believe, the works believe, that ye may know and may believe that in me `is' the Father, and I in Him.'
39Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,Therefore were they seeking again to seize him, and he went forth out of their hand,
40And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.and went away again to the other side of the Jordan, to the place where John was at first baptizing, and remained there,
41And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.and many came unto him, and said -- `John, indeed, did no sign, and all things, as many as John said about this one were true;'
42And many believed on him there.and many did believe in him there.

John 11 (57 verses) - Lazarus died. Jesus went to the tomb and said, "Lazarus, come out." Lazarus came out. The chief priests plotted to put Jesus to death.25

John 11:41-42 comments: What Does the Christian Bible say About Prayer? How Should Christians Pray?: 1. Pray in Private and Secretly, Not In Public

2(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing --
3Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;'
4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'
5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,
6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,
7Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;'
8His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!'
9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;
10But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.'
11These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;'
12Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;'
13Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.
14Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;
15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;'
16Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go -- we also, that we may die with him,'
17Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.
18Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,
19And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;
20Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.
21Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
22But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;'
23Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.'
24Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;'
25Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;
26And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die -- to the age;
27She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.believest thou this?' she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.'
28And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;'
29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;
30Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;
31The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying -- `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.'
32Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;'
33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,
34And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.`Where have ye laid him?' they say to him, `Sir, come and see;'
35Jesus wept.Jesus wept.
36Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!'
37And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?'
38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,
39Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;' the sister of him who hath died -- Martha -- saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;'
40Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?'
41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;
42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said `it', that they may believe that Thou didst send me.'
43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;'
44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.'
45Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;
46But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;
47Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?
48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.'
49And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,
50Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.'
51And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,
52And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.
53Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;
54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.
55And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;
56Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you -- that he may not come to the feast?'
57Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew `it', so that they may seize him.

6This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.and he said this, not because he was caring for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and what things were put in he was carrying.
7Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.Jesus, therefore, said, `Suffer her; for the day of my embalming she hath kept it,
8For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.for the poor ye have always with yourselves, and me ye have not always.'
9Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.A great multitude, therefore, of the Jews knew that he is there, and they came, not because of Jesus only, but that Lazarus also they may see, whom he raised out of the dead;
10But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;and the chief priests took counsel, that also Lazarus they may kill,
11Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.because on account of him many of the Jews were going away, and were believing in Jesus.
12On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,On the morrow, a great multitude that came to the feast, having heard that Jesus doth come to Jerusalem,
13Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.took the branches of the palms, and went forth to meet him, and were crying, `Hosanna, blessed `is' he who is coming in the name of the Lord -- the king of Israel;'
14And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,and Jesus having found a young ass did sit upon it, according as it is written,
15Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.`Fear not, daughter of Sion, lo, thy king doth come, sitting on an ass' colt.'
16These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.And these things his disciples did not know at the first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were having been written about him, and these things they did to him.
17The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.The multitude, therefore, who are with him, were testifying that he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and did raise him out of the dead;
18For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.because of this also did the multitude meet him, because they heard of his having done this sign,
19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.the Pharisees, therefore, said among themselves, `Ye see that ye do not gain anything, lo, the world did go after him.'
20And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:And there were certain Greeks out of those coming up that they may worship in the feast,
21The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.these then came near to Philip, who `is' from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, `Sir, we wish to see Jesus;'
22Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.Philip cometh and telleth Andrew, and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
23And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.And Jesus responded to them, saying, `The hour hath come that the Son of Man may be glorified;
24Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.verily, verily, I say to you, if the grain of the wheat, having fallen to the earth, may not die, itself remaineth alone; and if it may die, it doth bear much fruit;
25He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.he who is loving his life shall lose it, and he who is hating his life in this world -- to life age-during shall keep it;
26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.if any one may minister to me, let him follow me, and where I am, there also my ministrant shall be; and if any one may minister to me -- honour him will the Father.
27Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.`Now hath my soul been troubled, and what? shall I say -- Father, save me from this hour? -- but because of this I came to this hour;
28Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.Father, glorify Thy name.' There came, therefore, a voice out of the heaven, `I both glorified, and again I will glorify `it';'
29The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.the multitude, therefore, having stood and heard, were saying that there hath been thunder; others said, `A messenger hath spoken to him.'
30Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.Jesus answered and said, `Not because of me hath this voice come, but because of you;
31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.now is a judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast forth;
32And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.and I, if I may be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself.'
33This he said, signifying what death he should die.And this he said signifying by what death he was about to die;
34The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?the multitude answered him, `We heard out of the law that the Christ doth remain -- to the age; and how dost thou say, That it behoveth the Son of Man to be lifted up? who is this -- the Son of Man?'
35Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Yet a little time is the light with you; walk while ye have the light, that darkness may not overtake you; and he who is walking in the darkness hath not known where he goeth;
36While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.while ye have the light, believe in the light, that sons of light ye may become.' These things spake Jesus, and having gone away, he was hid from them,
37But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:yet he having done so many signs before them, they were not believing in him,
38That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said, `Lord, who gave credence to our report? and the arm of the Lord -- to whom was it revealed?'
39Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,Because of this they were not able to believe, that again Isaiah said,
40He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.`He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they might not see with the eyes, and understand with the heart, and turn back, and I might heal them;'
41These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.these things said Isaiah, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
42Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:Still, however, also out of the rulers did many believe in him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing, that they might not be put out of the synagogue,
43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
44Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.And Jesus cried and said, `He who is believing in me, doth not believe in me, but in Him who sent me;
45And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.and he who is beholding me, doth behold Him who sent me;
46I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.I a light to the world have come, that every one who is believing in me -- in the darkness may not remain;
47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.and if any one may hear my sayings, and not believe, I -- I do not judge him, for I came not that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world.
48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.`He who is rejecting me, and not receiving my sayings, hath one who is judging him, the word that I spake, that will judge him in the last day,
49For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.because I spake not from myself, but the Father who sent me, He did give me a command, what I may say, and what I may speak,
50And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.and I have known that His command is life age-during; what, therefore, I speak, according as the Father hath said to me, so I speak.'

1Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour hath come, that he may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own who `are' in the world -- to the end he loved them.

2And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;And supper being come, the devil already having put `it' into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariot, that he may deliver him up,
3Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;Jesus knowing that all things the Father hath given to him -- into `his' hands, and that from God he came forth, and unto God he goeth,
4He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.doth rise from the supper, and doth lay down his garments, and having taken a towel, he girded himself;
5After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.afterward he putteth water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe with the towel with which he was being girded.
6Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?He cometh, therefore, unto Simon Peter, and that one saith to him, `Sir, thou -- dost thou wash my feet?'
7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.Jesus answered and said to him, `That which I do thou hast not known now, but thou shalt know after these things;'
8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.Peter saith to him, `Thou mayest not wash my feet -- to the age.' Jesus answered him, `If I may not wash thee, thou hast no part with me;'
9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.'
10Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.Jesus saith to him, `He who hath been bathed hath no need save to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and ye are clean, but not all;'
11For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.for he knew him who is delivering him up; because of this he said, `Ye are not all clean.'
12So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?When, therefore, he washed their feet, and took his garments, having reclined (at meat) again, he said to them, `Do ye know what I have done to you?
13Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.ye call me, The Teacher and The Lord, and ye say well, for I am;
14If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.if then I did wash your feet -- the Lord and the Teacher -- ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
15For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.`For an example I gave to you, that, according as I did to you, ye also may do;
16Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.verily, verily, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him;
17If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.if these things ye have known, happy are ye, if ye may do them;
18I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.not concerning you all do I speak; I have known whom I chose for myself; but that the Writing may be fulfilled: He who is eating the bread with me, did lift up against me his heel.
19Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.`From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that, when it may come to pass, ye may believe that I am `he';
20Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.verily, verily, I say to you, he who is receiving whomsoever I may send, doth receive me; and he who is receiving me, doth receive Him who sent me.'
21When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.These things having said, Jesus was troubled in the spirit, and did testify, and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will deliver me up;'
22Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.the disciples were looking, therefore, one at another, doubting concerning whom he speaketh.
23Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.And there was one of his disciples reclining (at meat) in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus was loving;
24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.Simon Peter, then, doth beckon to this one, to inquire who he may be concerning whom he speaketh,
25He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?and that one having leant back on the breast of Jesus, respondeth to him, `Sir, who is it?'
26Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.Jesus answereth, `That one it is to whom I, having dipped the morsel, shall give it;' and having dipped the morsel, he giveth `it' to Judas of Simon, Iscariot.
27And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.And after the morsel, then the Adversary entered into that one, Jesus, therefore, saith to him, `What thou dost -- do quickly;'
28Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.and none of those reclining at meat knew for what intent he said this to him,
29For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.for certain were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus saith to him, `Buy what we have need of for the feast;' or that he may give something to the poor;
30He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.having received, therefore, the morsel, that one immediately went forth, and it was night.
31Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.When, therefore, he went forth, Jesus saith, `Now was the Son of Man glorified, and God was glorified in him;
32If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.if God was glorified in him, God also will glorify him in Himself; yea, immediately He will glorify him.
33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.`Little children, yet a little am I with you; ye will seek me, and, according as I said to the Jews -- Whither I go away, ye are not able to come, to you also I do say `it' now.
34A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.`A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; according as I did love you, that ye also love one another;
35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.in this shall all know that ye are my disciples, if ye may have love one to another.'
36Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, whither dost thou go away?' Jesus answered him, `Whither I go away, thou art not able now to follow me, but afterward thou shalt follow me.'
37Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.Peter saith to him, `Sir, wherefore am I not able to follow thee now? my life for thee I will lay down;'
38Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.Jesus answered him, `Thy life for me thou wilt lay down! verily, verily, I say to thee, a cock will not crow till thou mayest deny me thrice.'

2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.every branch in me not bearing fruit, He doth take it away, and every one bearing fruit, He doth cleanse by pruning it, that it may bear more fruit;
3Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.already ye are clean, because of the word that I have spoken to you;
4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.remain in me, and I in you, as the branch is not able to bear fruit of itself, if it may not remain in the vine, so neither ye, if ye may not remain in me.
5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.`I am the vine, ye the branches; he who is remaining in me, and I in him, this one doth bear much fruit, because apart from me ye are not able to do anything;
6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.if any one may not remain in me, he was cast forth without as the branch, and was withered, and they gather them, and cast to fire, and they are burned;
7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.if ye may remain in me, and my sayings in you may remain, whatever ye may wish ye shall ask, and it shall be done to you.
8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.`In this was my Father glorified, that ye may bear much fruit, and ye shall become my disciples.

11These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.these things I have spoken to you, that my joy in you may remain, and your joy may be full.

15Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.no more do I call you servants, because the servant hath not known what his lord doth, and you I have called friends, because all things that I heard from my Father, I did make known to you.
16Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.`Ye did not choose out me, but I chose out you, and did appoint you, that ye might go away, and might bear fruit, and your fruit might remain, that whatever ye may ask of the Father in my name, He may give you.
17These things I command you, that ye love one another.`These things I command you, that ye love one another;
18If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.if the world doth hate you, ye know that it hath hated me before you;
19If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.if of the world ye were, the world its own would have been loving, and because of the world ye are not -- but I chose out of the world -- because of this the world hateth you.
20Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.`Remember the word that I said to you, A servant is not greater than his lord; if me they did persecute, you also they will persecute; if my word they did keep, yours also they will keep;
21But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.but all these things will they do to you, because of my name, because they have not known Him who sent me;
22If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.if I had not come and spoken to them, they were not having sin; but now pretext they have not for their sin.
23He that hateth me hateth my Father also.`He who is hating me, doth hate also my Father;
24If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.if I did not do among them the works that no other hath done, they were not having sin, and now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father;
25But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.but -- that the word may be fulfilled that was written in their law -- They hated me without a cause.
26But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:`And when the Comforter may come, whom I will send to you from the Father -- the Spirit of truth, who from the Father doth come forth, he will testify of me;
27And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.and ye also do testify, because from the beginning ye are with me.

2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.out of the synagogues they will put you; but an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God;
3And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me.
4But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.`But these things I have spoken to you, that when the hour may come, ye may remember them, that I said `them' to you, and these things to you from the beginning I did not say, because I was with you;
5But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?and now I go away to Him who sent me, and none of you doth ask me, Whither dost thou go?
6But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.but because these things I have said to you, the sorrow hath filled your heart.
7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.`But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I may not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you, and if I go on, I will send Him unto you;
8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:and having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment;
9Of sin, because they believe not on me;concerning sin indeed, because they do not believe in me;
10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;and concerning righteousness, because unto my Father I go away, and no more do ye behold me;
11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged.
12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.`I have yet many things to say to you, but ye are not able to bear `them' now;
13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.and when He may come -- the Spirit of truth -- He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you;
14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.He will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you.
15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.`All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you;
16A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.a little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go away unto the Father.'
17Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?Therefore said `some' of his disciples one to another, `What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away unto the Father?'
18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.they said then, `What is this he saith -- the little while? we have not known what he saith.'
19Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?Jesus, therefore, knew that they were wishing to ask him, and he said to them, `Concerning this do ye seek one with another, because I said, A little while, and you do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?
20Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, and the world will rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow joy will become.
21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.`The woman, when she may bear, hath sorrow, because her hour did come, and when she may bear the child, no more doth she remember the anguish, because of the joy that a man was born to the world.
22And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.`And ye, therefore, now, indeed, have sorrow; and again I will see you, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one doth take from you,
23And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.and in that day ye will question me nothing; verily, verily, I say to you, as many things as ye may ask of the Father in my name, He will give you;
24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.till now ye did ask nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.`These things in similitudes I have spoken to you, but there cometh an hour when no more in similitudes will I speak to you, but freely of the Father, will tell you.
26At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:`In that day, in my name ye will make request, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you,
27For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.for the Father himself doth love you, because me ye have loved, and ye have believed that I from God came forth;
28I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.I came forth from the Father, and have come to the world; again I leave the world, and go on unto the Father.'
29His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.His disciples say to him, `Lo, now freely thou dost speak, and no similitude speakest thou;
30Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.now we have known that thou hast known all things, and hast no need that any one do question thee; in this we believe that from God thou didst come forth.'
31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?Jesus answered them, `Now do ye believe? lo, there doth come an hour,
32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.and now it hath come, that ye may be scattered, each to his own things, and me ye may leave alone, and I am not alone, because the Father is with me;
33These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.these things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation, but take courage -- I have overcome the world.'

2As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.according as Thou didst give to him authority over all flesh, that -- all that Thou hast given to him -- he may give to them life age-during;
3And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.and this is the life age-during, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and him whom Thou didst send -- Jesus Christ;
4I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.I did glorify Thee on the earth, the work I did finish that Thou hast given me, that I may do `it'.
5And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.`And now, glorify me, Thou Father, with Thyself, with the glory that I had before the world was, with Thee;
6I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.I did manifest Thy name to the men whom Thou hast given to me out of the world; Thine they were, and to me Thou hast given them, and Thy word they have kept;
7Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.now they have known that all things, as many as Thou hast given to me, are from Thee,
8For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.because the sayings that Thou hast given to me, I have given to them, and they themselves received, and have known truly, that from Thee I came forth, and they did believe that Thou didst send me.
9I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.`I ask in regard to them; not in regard to the world do I ask, but in regard to those whom Thou hast given to me, because Thine they are,
10And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.and all mine are Thine, and Thine `are' mine, and I have been glorified in them;
11And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.and no more am I in the world, and these are in the world, and I come unto Thee. Holy Father, keep them in Thy name, whom Thou hast given to me, that they may be one as we;
12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.when I was with them in the world, I was keeping them in Thy name; those whom Thou hast given to me I did guard, and none of them was destroyed, except the son of the destruction, that the Writing may be fulfilled.
13And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.`And now unto Thee I come, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves;
14I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.I have given to them Thy word, and the world did hate them, because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world;
15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.I do not ask that Thou mayest take them out of the world, but that Thou mayest keep them out of the evil.
16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.`Of the world they are not, as I of the world am not;
17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.sanctify them in Thy truth, Thy word is truth;
18As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.as Thou didst send me to the world, I also did send them to the world;
19And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.and for them do I sanctify myself, that they also themselves may be sanctified in truth.
20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;`And not in regard to these alone do I ask, but also in regard to those who shall be believing, through their word, in me;
21That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.that they all may be one, as Thou Father `art' in me, and I in Thee; that they also in us may be one, that the world may believe that Thou didst send me.
22And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:`And I, the glory that thou hast given to me, have given to them, that they may be one as we are one;
23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.I in them, and Thou in me, that they may be perfected into one, and that the world may know that Thou didst send me, and didst love them as Thou didst love me.
24Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.`Father, those whom Thou hast given to me, I will that where I am they also may be with me, that they may behold my glory that Thou didst give to me, because Thou didst love me before the foundation of the world.
25O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.`Righteous Father, also the world did not know Thee, and I knew Thee, and these have known that Thou didst send me,
26And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.and I made known to them Thy name, and will make known, that the love with which Thou lovedst me in them may be, and I in them.'

2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.and Judas also, who delivered him up, had known the place, because many times did Jesus assemble there with his disciples.
3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.Judas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons;
4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, `Whom do ye seek?'
5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.they answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;' Jesus saith to them, `I am `he';' -- and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them; --
6As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.when, therefore, he said to them -- `I am `he',' they went away backward, and fell to the ground.
7Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.Again, therefore, he questioned them, `Whom do ye seek?' and they said, `Jesus the Nazarene;'
8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:Jesus answered, `I said to you that I am `he'; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;'
9That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.that the word might be fulfilled that he said -- `Those whom Thou hast given to me, I did not lose of them even one.'
10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the chief priest's servant, and cut off his right ear -- and the name of the servant was Malchus --
11Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, `Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father hath given to me, may I not drink it?'
12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,The band, therefore, and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took hold on Jesus, and bound him,
13And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.and they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year,
14Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.and Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people.
15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.And following Jesus was Simon Peter, and the other disciple, and that disciple was known to the chief priest, and he entered with Jesus to the hall of the chief priest,
16But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.and Peter was standing at the door without, therefore went forth the other disciple who was known to the chief priest, and he spake to the female keeping the door, and he brought in Peter.
17Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.Then said the maid keeping the door to Peter, `Art thou also of the disciples of this man?' he saith, `I am not;'
18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.and the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, and warming himself.
19The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.The chief priests, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his teaching;
20Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.Jesus answered him, `I spake freely to the world, I did always teach in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews do always come together; and in secret I spake nothing;
21Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.why me dost thou question? question those having heard what I spake to them; lo, these have known what I said.'
22And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?And he having said these things, one of the officers standing by did give Jesus a slap, saying, `Thus dost thou answer the chief priest?'
23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?Jesus answered him, `If I spake ill, testify concerning the ill; and if well, why me dost thou smite?'
24Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest.
25And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said then to him, `Art thou also of his disciples?' he denied, and said, `I am not.'
26One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?One of the servants of the chief priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, `Did not I see thee in the garden with him?'
27Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.again, therefore, Peter denied, and immediately a cock crew.
28Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.They led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover;
29Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?Pilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, `What accusation do ye bring against this man?'
30They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.they answered and said to him, `If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.'
31Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:Pilate, therefore, said to them, `Take ye him -- ye -- and according to your law judge him;' the Jews, therefore, said to him, `It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;'
32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.
33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?Pilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, `Thou art the King of the Jews?'
34Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?Jesus answered him, `From thyself dost thou say this? or did others say it to thee about me?'
35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?Pilate answered, `Am I a Jew? thy nation, and the chief priests did deliver thee up to me; what didst thou?'
36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.Jesus answered, `My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my officers had struggled that I might not be delivered up to Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.'
37Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.Pilate, therefore, said to him, `Art thou then a king?' Jesus answered, `Thou dost say `it'; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.'
38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.Pilate saith to him, `What is truth?' and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, `I do find no fault in him;
39But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?and ye have a custom that I shall release to you one in the passover; will ye, therefore, `that' I shall release to you the king of the Jews?'
40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.therefore they all cried out again, saying, `Not this one -- but Barabbas;' and Barabbas was a robber.

2And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,and the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns, did place `it' on his head, and a purple garment they put around him,
3And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.and said, `Hail! the king of the Jews;' and they were giving him slaps.
4Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.Pilate, therefore, again went forth without, and saith to them, `Lo, I do bring him to you without, that ye may know that in him I find no fault;'
5Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!Jesus, therefore, came forth without, bearing the thorny crown and the purple garment; and he saith to them, `Lo, the man!'
6When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.When, therefore, the chief priests and the officers did see him, they cried out, saying, `Crucify, crucify;' Pilate saith to them, `Take ye him -- ye, and crucify; for I find no fault in him;'
7The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.the Jews answered him, `We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, for he made himself Son of God.'
8When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;When, therefore, Pilate heard this word, he was the more afraid,
9And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.and entered again to the praetorium, and saith to Jesus, `Whence art thou?' and Jesus gave him no answer.
10Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?Pilate, therefore, saith to him, `To me dost thou not speak? hast thou not known that I have authority to crucify thee, and I have authority to release thee?'
11Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.Jesus answered, `Thou wouldst have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.'
12And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.From this `time' was Pilate seeking to release him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, `If this one thou mayest release, thou art not a friend of Caesar; every one making himself a king, doth speak against Caesar.'
13When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus without -- and he sat down upon the tribunal -- to a place called, `Pavement,' and in Hebrew, Gabbatha;
14And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!and it was the preparation of the passover, and as it were the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews, `Lo, your king!'
15But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.and they cried out, `Take away, take away, crucify him;' Pilate saith to them, `Your king shall I crucify?' the chief priests answered, `We have no king except Caesar.'
16Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.Then, therefore, he delivered him up to them, that he may be crucified, and they took Jesus and led `him' away,
17And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:and bearing his cross, he went forth to the place called `Place' of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha;
18Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side, and on that side, and Jesus in the midst.
19And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.And Pilate also wrote a title, and put `it' on the cross, and it was written, `Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews;'
20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.this title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because the place was nigh to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman.
21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.The chief priests of the Jews said, therefore, to Pilate, `Write not -- The king of the Jews, but that one said, I am king of the Jews;'
22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.Pilate answered, `What I have written, I have written.'
23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.The soldiers, therefore, when they did crucify Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, also the coat, and the coat was seamless, from the top woven throughout,
24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.they said, therefore, to one another, `We may not rend it, but cast a lot for it, whose it shall be;' that the Writing might be fulfilled, that is saying, `They divided my garments to themselves, and upon my raiment they did cast a lot;' the soldiers, therefore, indeed, did these things.
25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.And there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleopas, and Mary the Magdalene;
26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!Jesus, therefore, having seen `his' mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he was loving, he saith to his mother, `Woman, lo, thy son;'
27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.afterward he saith to the disciple, `Lo, thy mother;' and from that hour the disciple took her to his own `home'.
28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, saith, `I thirst;'
29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.a vessel, therefore, was placed full of vinegar, and they having filled a sponge with vinegar, and having put `it' around a hyssop stalk, did put `it' to his mouth;
30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, `It hath been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit.
31The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.The Jews, therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, since it was the preparation, (for that sabbath day was a great one,) asked of Pilate that their legs may be broken, and they taken away.
32Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.The soldiers, therefore, came, and of the first indeed they did break the legs, and of the other who was crucified with him,
33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:and having come to Jesus, when they saw him already having been dead, they did not break his legs;
34But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.but one of the soldiers with a spear did pierce his side, and immediately there came forth blood and water;
35And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.and he who hath seen hath testified, and his testimony is true, and that one hath known that true things he speaketh, that ye also may believe.
36For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.For these things came to pass, that the Writing may be fulfilled, `A bone of him shall not be broken;'
37And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.and again another Writing saith, `They shall look to him whom they did pierce.'
38And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.And after these things did Joseph of Arimathea -- being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed, through the fear of the Jews -- ask of Pilate, that he may take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave leave; he came, therefore, and took away the body of Jesus,
39And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.and Nicodemus also came -- who came unto Jesus by night at the first -- bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, as it were, a hundred pounds.
40Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.They took, therefore, the body of Jesus, and bound it with linen clothes with the spices, according as it was the custom of the Jews to prepare for burial;
41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.and there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one was yet laid;
42There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.there, therefore, because of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was nigh, they laid Jesus.

John 20 (31 verses) - Mary went to the tomb and found it empty. Jesus met her. He came and stood among the disciples. Thomas said, "My Lord and my God!"25

2Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.she runneth, therefore, and cometh unto Simon Peter, and unto the other disciple whom Jesus was loving, and saith to them, `They took away the Lord out of the tomb, and we have not known where they laid him.'
3Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.Peter, therefore, went forth, and the other disciple, and they were coming to the tomb,
4So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.and the two were running together, and the other disciple did run forward more quickly than Peter, and came first to the tomb,
5And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.and having stooped down, seeth the linen clothes lying, yet, indeed, he entered not.

8Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.then, therefore, entered also the other disciple who came first unto the tomb, and he saw, and did believe;
9For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.for not yet did they know the Writing, that it behoveth him out of the dead to rise again.
10Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.The disciples therefore went away again unto their own friends,
11But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,and Mary was standing near the tomb, weeping without; as she was weeping, then, she stooped down to the tomb, and beholdeth two messengers in white, sitting,

15Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.Jesus saith to her, `Woman, why dost thou weep? whom dost thou seek;' she, supposing that he is the gardener, saith to him, `Sir, if thou didst carry him away, tell me where thou didst lay him, and I will take him away;'

18Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the LORD, and that he had spoken these things unto her.Mary the Magdalene cometh, telling to the disciples that she hath seen the Lord, and `that' these things he said to her.
19Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.It being, therefore, evening, on that day, the first of the sabbaths, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were assembled, through fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith to them, `Peace to you;'
20And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the LORD.and this having said, he shewed them his hands and side; the disciples, therefore, rejoiced, having seen the Lord.

But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.the other disciples, therefore, said to him, `We have seen the Lord;' and he said to them, `If I may not see in his hands the mark of the nails, and may put my finger to the mark of the nails, and may put my hand to his side, I will not believe.'
26And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.And after eight days, again were his disciples within, and Thomas with them; Jesus cometh, the doors having been shut, and he stood in the midst, and said, `Peace to you!'

1After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.After these things did Jesus manifest himself again to the disciples on the sea of Tiberias, and he did manifest himself thus:

2There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas who is called Didymus, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, and the `sons' of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.
3Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.Simon Peter saith to them, `I go away to fish;' they say to him, `We go -- we also -- with thee;' they went forth and entered into the boat immediately, and on that night they caught nothing.
4But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.And morning being now come, Jesus stood at the shore, yet indeed the disciples did not know that it is Jesus;
5Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.Jesus, therefore, saith to them, `Lads, have ye any meat?'
6And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.they answered him, `No;' and he said to them, `Cast the net at the right side of the boat, and ye shall find;' they cast, therefore, and no longer were they able to draw it, from the multitude of the fishes.
7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.That disciple, therefore, whom Jesus was loving saith to Peter, `The Lord it is!' Simon Peter, therefore, having heard that it is the Lord, did gird on the outer coat, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea;
8And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.and the other disciples came by the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but as it were about two hundred cubits off, dragging the net of the fishes;
9As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.when, therefore, they came to the land, they behold a fire of coals lying, and a fish lying on it, and bread.
10Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.Jesus saith to them, `Bring ye from the fishes that ye caught now;'
11Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.Simon Peter went up, and drew the net up on the land, full of great fishes, an hundred fifty and three, and though they were so many, the net was not rent.
12Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.Jesus saith to them, `Come ye, dine;' and none of the disciples was venturing to inquire of him, `Who art thou?' knowing that it is the Lord;
13Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.Jesus, therefore, doth come and take the bread and give to them, and the fish in like manner;
14This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.this `is' now a third time Jesus was manifested to his disciples, having been raised from the dead.
15So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.When, therefore, they dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, `Simon, `son' of Jonas, dost thou love me more than these?' he saith to him, `Yes, Lord; thou hast known that I dearly love thee;' he saith to him, `Feed my lambs.'
16He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.He saith to him again, a second time, `Simon, `son' of Jonas, dost thou love me?' he saith to him, `Yes, Lord; thou hast known that I dearly love thee;' he saith to him, `Tend my sheep.'
17He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.He saith to him the third time, `Simon, `son' of Jonas, dost thou dearly love me?' Peter was grieved that he said to him the third time, `Dost thou dearly love me?' and he said to him, `Lord, thou hast known all things; thou dost know that I dearly love thee.' Jesus saith to him, `Feed my sheep;
18Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.verily, verily, I say to thee, When thou wast younger, thou wast girding thyself and wast walking whither thou didst will, but when thou mayest be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another will gird thee, and shall carry `thee' whither thou dost not will;'
19This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.and this he said, signifying by what death he shall glorify God; and having said this, he saith to him, `Be following me.'
20Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?And Peter having turned about doth see the disciple whom Jesus was loving following, (who also reclined in the supper on his breast, and said, `Sir, who is he who is delivering thee up?')
21Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?Peter having seen this one, saith to Jesus, `Lord, and what of this one?'
22Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.Jesus saith to him, `If him I will to remain till I come, what -- to thee? be thou following me.' This word, therefore, went forth to the brethren that that disciple doth not die,
23Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?yet Jesus did not say to him, that he doth not die, but, `If him I will to remain till I come, what -- to thee?'
24This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.this is the disciple who is testifying concerning these things, and he wrote these things, and we have known that his testimony is true.
25And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.And there are also many other things -- as many as Jesus did -- which, if they may be written one by one, not even the world itself I think to have place for the books written. Amen.
