The Gospel of John was written around 120CE1,2,3. The text is anonymous4 and definitely not written by the apostle called John5 nor by any eyewitness5, although the early Christian church promoted this as such6. We do know that the author was from Ephesus (in Asia Minor). The oldest surviving fragment of John is from 125CE. The earliest versions did not contain the final chapter, which describes Jesus Christ appearing to his disciples after rising from the dead.
It is significantly different from the other gospels in style and theology7. The Gospel of John is an interpretation of events in Jesus life8 that the author had heard about, but, with no real parables9 and instead, some plays on words and figurative, symbolic and abstract speech8. The other three gospels have Jesus speak tersely, in witty sayings, but 'John quotes lengthy speeches in fluent Greek' and is clearly not replicating the words of Jesus himself10. Miracles and events that were only ever seen by John are suspect (no-one else wrote about them!)8. It is best to consider the Gospel of John to be imaginative fiction or spiritual encouragement, but not strictly factual nor historical7.

The Gospel of John was written around 120CE1,13. The oldest surviving fragment dates from 125CE. Conservatives prefer to believe an earlier date because it makes the Gospel more legitimate if it could be written by someone who knew Jesus. However, even conservatives allow a date of 100CE14, which is still too late to be the words of an eyewitness of Jesus5. Much of the theology professed in John is that which was developed until much later than the other gospels7. John 9 in particular contains several 'historical' details that were not actual true until several decades after Jesus' time.

It is best to consider the Gospel of John to be imaginative fiction or spiritual encouragement, but not strictly factual nor historical7. Everyone who speaks in this gospel has the same set of distinctive characters that are suspiciously unique to John (including the words of Jesus)17. Theologian A. N. Wilson says "scholars have disputed whether any of this [gospel] can be understood historically, since the Fourth Gospel so obviously writes from a 'theological' point of view"7 and that "it can only be read as a testimony, not as neutral history"18.
The Crucifixion is Put on a Thursday: In the three synoptic gospels, it occurs on Friday. But in John, who tells the story with the intention of maximizing every symbolic element possible, Jesus dies on Thursday19 (John 19:14-16).
Did Jesus Claim to be the Messiah? This debate centres on John 4:25-26 where Jesus says, in the King James translation, that "I that speak unto thee am he".Price (2003)20 points out three problems. (1) The phrase comes from John, the uniquely untrustworthy gospel. (2) It mistakenly assumes that the Samitarians had a Jewish belief in a Davidic Messiah and (3) a more accurate translation may be that Jesus was saying "The Messiah may indeed come one day, but I am speaking to you now", and was therefore deferring the true answer to her question to the future, when she could find out the answer from the messiah when he comes.21
Events Seen by No-One Else include major miracles at Cana and the raising of Lazarus from the dead, which were not even recorded in the other gospels8. Across the world, magical events such as those became widely reported and recorded by many. The Roman Empire was not short of historians who loved to mention such things. But only the Gospel of John, 100 years later, knows what happened at Cana, and what happened to Lazarus. Those stories were clearly made-up by the author of John.
The Invented Details of the Discussion With Nicodemus: John 3:1-21 rewrites a story from Mark chapter 10 which was recorded two generations earlier, and adds detail. Nicodemus and Jesus discuss the afterlife.

The ruler is nonplussed: 'How can a man be born when he is old? Is he to enter his mother's womb and be born a second time?' Jesus goes on to explain it all again, in more detail. But Robert M. Price20 points out that this is a "a dialogue that never took place: the whole thing depends upon Jesus and Nicodemus speaking Greek!"22 because the misunderstanding that underlies the conversation only exists due to an ambiguity in a Greek word which can either mean "again" or "from above", and these two Jewish Palestinian men simply wouldn't have hit this misunderstanding when speaking in Hebrew.
The Story of the Man Born Blind (John 9:1-41). The Gospel of John chapter 9 contains a rewrite of Mark 8:22-26, wherein a blind man is healed by Jesus. But John adds many details that were clearly invented much later, rather than being true recordings of a historical event. It contradicts Mark (a more trustworthy gospel) in several of those details, but worse than that, it contains anachronistic elements that show us that the text was not created until several decades later than the time you'd otherwise assume. When the healed man professes faith in Jesus, he is excommunicated from the synagogue by the Jews, however, such routine excommunications of Jesus-believers did not begin until decades later than the time of Jesus. The Pharisees even view Jesus as the founder of a rival religion, which is a ridiculous anachronism suitable only for a time several decades later when this was apparent fact. Likewise, because when John was writing (over 100 years later), everyone already knew that Jesus was the messiah, so the concept of this being a secret is forgotten in John 9:35-39. John is widely regarded as an untrustworthy gospel, and it is not wise to base theological or historical arguments on its text.23.

They all share a structure in which carnal-minded opponents misunderstand Jesus' spiritual double entendres (sometimes existing only in Greek, 3:3, 6:33, as if we could imagine Jesus debating with Palestinian Pharisees in Greek!).
note the artificial prompts put into the mouths of Mary the mother of Jesus (2:5) and Martha of Bethany (11:21-22). They have no possible meaning in the imagined historical circumstances and exist only to provide a drumroll anticipating the miracle Jesus will go on to work.”

The Gospel of John chapter 9 contains a rewrite of Mark 8:22-26, wherein a blind man is healed by Jesus. But John adds many details that were clearly invented much later, rather than being true recordings of a historical event. It contradicts Mark (a more trustworthy gospel) in several of those details, but worse than that, it contains anachronistic elements that show us that the text was not created until several decades later than the time you'd otherwise assume. When the healed man professes faith in Jesus, he is excommunicated from the synagogue by the Jews, however, such routine excommunications of Jesus-believers did not begin until decades later than the time of Jesus. The Pharisees even view Jesus as the founder of a rival religion, which is a ridiculous anachronism suitable only for a time several decades later when this was apparent fact. Likewise, because when John was writing (over 100 years later), everyone already knew that Jesus was the messiah, so the concept of this being a secret is forgotten in John 9:35-39. John is widely regarded as an untrustworthy gospel, and it is not wise to base theological or historical arguments on its text.23
